The current outright Speed Sailing Record of 49.09 knots (about 56.45 mph) was set by Antoine Albeau of France on March 5, 2008. This was an average speed over a 500 meter race course, set on the man-made canal in Saintes Maries de la Mer, France, nicknamed the "The French Trench".
